Launched in 2001, the Dot NAME generic Top-Level Domain is the single TLD supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are famous by. Initially, solely third-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to register john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already registered third-level domains remained operational.
